The Power of Plants

Long before humans walked the earth, plants were evolving through millions of years of changing conditions, shaping a world where life could flourish.
Plants have an extraordinary power to endure and renew. They capture the energy of the sun and turn it into food. They withstand drought and flood, grow from cracks in stone, sleep beneath the soil as seeds, and return when conditions are right. Rooted in place, they have developed remarkable ways to survive—defending themselves from hungry animals with sharp spines, thick leaves, and chemicals, and conserving precious water when rain is scarce. And while a plant may remain rooted for life, its seeds can travel astonishing distances—carried by wind and water, or transported by animals to places where a new generation can begin.
Much of what sustained our ancestors—and still sustains us today—began with a leaf, root, seed, fruit, or flower. Plants nourish us, heal us, provide fiber and shelter, and bring beauty, color, and fragrance into our lives. But our dependence runs deeper. Plants release the oxygen we breathe and provide the food and energy that feed life across the planet.
Native plants carry a special wisdom: the memory of place. Over generations, they have adapted to local soils, water, seasons, rains, drought, and wildlife. Their flowers, fruits, and seeds are woven into the lives around them; their roots hold the earth and help water enter the soil, while plants growing in and along the water provide food and shelter for other life. Along Las Cachinches, these relationships have developed over generations, even as the world around them continues to change.
The power of plants is extraordinary—their resilience, their generosity, and their remarkable ability to sustain life remind us of the wonder of life itself.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My theme was the power of plants, particularly the healing power. The mural depicts my friend lying down, surrounded by flowers and plants. She lives with a sickness that detonates by stress, but in today's fast-paced world everything is stressful. This mural is a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with nature.
