Cycles of Life

Life moves in cycles—times of growth and rest, abundance and scarcity, change and renewal. In Las Cachinches, these rhythms are all around us.
The changes are familiar. Mesquites and huizaches lose their leaves and later fill out again. Birds build nests and raise their young. The first summer rains turn dry grasses green, wildflowers bloom, insects emerge, and swallows swoop and dart through the air. Toads call after the rains, ducks paddle in small pools, and after a heavy storm, the tranquil arroyo can become a raging river, alive with the sound of rushing water.
But these cycles are more than the changing seasons. They are part of how life adapts, survives, and begins again. A tree drops its leaves to save water and energy. A seed may wait for months until conditions are right to grow. Birds raise their young when there is enough food to feed them. Flowers attract pollinators, then produce fruits and seeds that carry new life into another season. Times of abundance are followed by times of scarcity; bursts of activity by rest.
The butterfly at the heart of this mural carries its own story of transformation—from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis to winged adult. Each stage is different, and each is necessary. Its metamorphosis reminds us that change is not separate from life; it is how life continues.
We, too, live in cycles. There are times to move, create, and flourish, and times to withdraw, reflect, and restore ourselves. Rest is not an interruption between the important moments. Like the quiet seed beneath dry earth or the chrysalis before the butterfly emerges, it is part of the process.
In nature, endings become beginnings. Nothing stays the same, yet life continues—changing form, adapting, resting, and beginning again.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"Life Cycles" is a playful and flirtatious depiction of a butterfly's metamorphosis, comparing it to the cyclical nature of a woman. A reminder that days of rest are just as necessary as days of energy, and that both are part of a fulfilling life.
MURAL SPONSOR
At Epicurean Exchange Culinary Travel, food is a gateway to understanding culture. Through thoughtfully designed journeys, travelers experience a destination through its culinary traditions—discovering where food is grown, meeting the people who produce and prepare it, and experiencing the traditions of gathering around the table to share a meal.
For more than 25 years, Chef Charlie Volker has worked as an independent chef, cooking instructor, food and recipe writer, culinary travel guide, and owner of Epicurean Exchange Culinary Travel. Throughout his career, his work has been guided by a belief that food and travel can do more than teach us new skills or introduce us to new places. They can open doors to people, traditions, ideas, and ways of life that broaden our understanding of the world.
Each Epicurean Exchange itinerary brings this philosophy to life through authentic culinary experiences and meaningful cultural encounters. The goal is not simply to visit a place, but to connect with it—to learn from the people who call it home and return with new knowledge, perspectives, and experiences to share with our own families, friends, and communities.
