Roots of Strength

Trees are anchors in our landscape. Their roots hold the soil, capture rainwater, and help protect the land from erosion. Their leaves absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, while their canopies cool the air and provide welcome shade. By capturing and storing carbon, trees also help fight climate change and make our communities more resilient to rising temperatures. Their flowers, fruits, seeds, leaves, bark, and branches provide food and shelter for birds, insects, mammals, and countless other living things.

Along Las Cachinches, trees are an essential part of the living corridor that connects water, land, wildlife, and people. San Miguel’s native trees—including mesquites, huizaches, and other species shaped by our dry climate—are particularly valuable. Their deep roots and ability to survive long periods without rain make them well suited to this landscape, while generations of local wildlife have come to depend upon them. Carefully selected adapted trees can also contribute to the diversity and resilience of our urban forest.
Yet trees that appear strong can be surprisingly vulnerable. Drought, compacted soil, construction, loss of open ground, improper pruning, and damage to roots and bark can weaken them over time. Native trees may face additional pressure from heavy infestations of paxtle and parasitic mistletoe, particularly when they are already stressed.

Protecting trees begins with recognizing their value. We can give their roots room to breathe, protect the soil around them, prune with care, provide water when needed, and choose native and well-adapted species when planting for the future.

Rooted in the land, trees help hold an entire community of life together.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In this piece, I wanted to represent the recovery of trees that are cut down for various reasons. Even though they are destroyed, they continue to flourish as long as they have strong roots. A tree can be a home for many animals, and in this case, it is the home of a Cacomistle,  since they are native to San Miguel de Allende.  Therefore, this mural represents the roots and strength of the trees and the roots of the ancestors or inhabitants of San Miguel. The composition is a landscape of the Arroyo de las Cachinces stream, surrounded by stones and a small waterfall, creating a beautiful landscape reminiscent of a fantasy story.

My name is Miguel Ángel Tavera González. I am a self-taught visual artist originally from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. For over 12 years, I have found in art a way to express ideas, emotions, and experiences that connect me with people and my surroundings.

My work encompasses techniques such as oil painting, painting on canvas, watercolor, drawing, and graffiti, disciplines that have allowed me to develop my own visual language. I have participated in art and mural projects in various Mexican states, including Quintana Roo, the State of Mexico, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, and Guerrero, bringing my work to public and community spaces.

I am inspired by art's ability to transform places and generate dialogue among those who live there. I believe that Muralism and urban art are some of the most democratic expressions that exist, since they bring art closer to people in a free and everyday way, turning the streets into spaces for meeting, reflection and identity.

In addition to my artistic production, I have led workshops and collaborated on cultural projects focused on community engagement. I currently serve on the board of directors of Coyote Urbano AC, where I continue to promote initiatives that strengthen access to art and culture as tools for social development.
