Moments of Wonder

A flash of wings overhead. A spider web jeweled with morning dew. The sudden call of a bird from deep within a tree. A tiny flower growing from a crack in the stone. Tadpoles appearing in a pool left by the summer rains. A fox slipping through the arroyo after dark.

The natural world is filled with moments like these—ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. They invite us to stop, look more closely, and ask questions. How does a seed know when to grow? How does a bird find its way across continents? How can a caterpillar become a butterfly? How many lives are unfolding around us that we never see?

Wonder opens the mind to curiosity and the heart to connection. It reminds us that we are surrounded by lives different from our own, each finding its way through the world. The more closely we look, the more remarkable even the smallest things become.

Las Cachinches offers countless opportunities for wonder. All life here is connected—seen and unseen, small and soaring, quiet and wild. Beneath the soil, among the grasses, in the trees, along the water, and under the cover of darkness, life is continually moving, growing, feeding, resting, reproducing, and beginning again.

Perhaps wonder is one of the first steps toward caring. When we become curious about something, we begin to know it. When we know it, we begin to value it. And when we value the living world around us, we are more likely to protect it.

Sometimes all it takes is paying attention.

ARTIST

My name is Gabriel Morin Vargas, better known as Gabo. I am from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and work primarily as a muralist and commissioned painter.

I began my professional artistic career in 2014, and since 2019 I have focused my practice on muralism. I am a self-taught artist; my training has come through constant practice, observation, and learning alongside other artists who have influenced the development of my technique and creative vision.

My work centers on three main themes: nature, the human figure, and fantasy. Using vinyl paint, brushes, and spray paint, I seek to create images that invite people to see the world from a different perspective and to find beauty in everyday moments—the flight of a bird, a shared moment of happiness, or a landscape that sparks the imagination. My work incorporates elements of fantasy as a way to create worlds of my own and offer a space for reflection and escape. My artistic philosophy is summed up in the words: “It’s no fun living only in the real world; create your own world.”

I have been invited to create murals in several states across Mexico, including Nuevo León, Mexico City, and Quintana Roo, participating in projects that bring art into the community and transform public spaces.

I have also collaborated with San Miguel de Allende’s Department of Culture and Traditions, creating community murals and leading workshops for children and young people interested in urban art. I have served as a judge in art competitions and given talks on muralism and urban art, sharing my experience and promoting art as a tool for expression, identity, and social transformation.

MURAL SPONSORS

Since 1996, NAMUH has brought an extraordinary world of art, furniture, objects, and craftsmanship to San Miguel de Allende. Its vast collection reflects decades of exploration and a passion for pieces that carry the character of the places, cultures, and artisans from which they come.

Sourced from Mexico and around the world, the collection brings together distinctive objects chosen for their craftsmanship, beauty, history, and individuality. The result is less a conventional showroom than a place of discovery, where designers, architects, collectors, and the simply curious can wander among pieces both ancient and contemporary, monumental and intimate.

Recognized by Architectural Digest as Mexico’s best decorating house, NAMUH has become a San Miguel destination in its own right—a place where every visit offers the possibility of finding something unexpected.
